What Are Small Plug-In Heaters Good For? An Honest Look
Compact wall-plug heaters are popular for a reason. They're also not right for every room. Here's where they shine and where they fall short.
Compact heaters that plug straight into a wall outlet have become very popular. They're small, simple and inexpensive to run. But they're often marketed as if they can heat a whole home. It helps to know what they can really do.
What they are
Most plug-in heaters are small ceramic fan heaters built into a unit that plugs directly into an outlet, with no cord. Many have a digital thermostat, a timer and a remote. A typical unit is rated around 400 to 500 watts.
Where they shine
- Personal warmth. Taking the chill off at a desk, a reading chair or a craft table.
- Small spaces. Bathrooms (only if rated for them), walk-in closets, small offices, dorm rooms.
- Cold spots. One room in the house that's always colder than the rest.
- Convenience. No cord to trip over, no floor space used, easy to move from room to room.
- Running cost. At 500 watts, they use about a third as much power as a full-size 1,500-watt heater. See the running-cost math.
Where they fall short
- Large or drafty rooms. Lower wattage means less heat. A big living room in a cold climate usually needs more than 500 watts.
- Whole-home heating. They're a supplement to your main heat, not a replacement.
- Outlet placement. Since they plug straight into the wall, the heat comes from wherever your outlet is, which may not be where you sit.
What to look for
- A safety certification mark from a recognized testing lab
- Overheat protection and an automatic shut-off timer
- An adjustable thermostat
- A clear return policy and warranty from the seller
Safety still applies
Even small heaters need clear space around them and a direct wall outlet. Plug-in units shouldn't go in an outlet behind furniture or curtains. Read our space heater safety checklist.
Is a plug-in heater right for you?
- You want warmth in one small space or one spot
- You have a clear wall outlet near where you sit
- You'll use it alongside, not instead of, your main heat
- You'll follow the safety rules every time
The bottom line
Small plug-in heaters are a smart, low-cost way to warm a small space or yourself. Just keep expectations realistic: they add comfort where you are, rather than heating your whole house.
